The Dark Detective will protect the streets of Gotham City once again.
Warner Brothers set a July 20, 2012 release date for the third in the latest series of Batman films early Sunday.
The highly-anticipated follow-up would come four years after the release of “The Dark Knight,” the block-buster sequel that earned Heath Ledger a posthumous Oscar for his twisted turn as the villainous Joker, and more than $1.3 billion worldwide.
Christopher Nolan, who directed 2005′s “Batman Begins” as well as its sequel, told the Los Angeles Times last month that “My brother [Jonathan Nolan] is writing a script for me and we’ll wait to see how it turns out.”
The script is based upon a story by Jonathan Nolan and David Goyer, who also co-wrote the original film, as well as the story for “The Dark Knight.”
“Without getting into specifics,” he said, “the key thing that makes the third film a great possibility for us is that we want to finish our story, and [view] it as the finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story.”
Christopher Nolan has also been tasked with giving new life to Superman on the big screen. He isn’t expected to direct that film, however, but serve simply producer. This would likely leave room for him helm the third Batman film.
