Gilead Says HIV Drug Combo Tests Well

Gilead Sciences Inc. said a combination treatment for HIV infection was doing well halfway through a mid-stage clinical test.

The combination, called “quad,” is a mix of elvitegravir, GS 9350 and Truvada (itself a combination of emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate). After 24 weeks of testing in 71 people, the once-a-day tablet was doing as well as Atripla, another HIV treatment (Truvada plus efavirenz).

Gilead hopes the quad treatment will be useful for people who can’t tolerate Atripla or for “women of childbearing potential” — because efavirenz, part of the Atripla combination, can harm an embryo or fetus.

The Phase II trial, started in April, is still going on, and Gilead plans to give full results of the testing early this year.

Patients are being tested at 46 places — locally that includes Stanford University, Metropolis Medical in San Francisco and the East Bay AIDS Center in Oakland.

Gilead (NASDAQ: GILD) is based in Foster City.
